Exam Strategy
Readiness Check
You are ready when you can:
- Apply Pythagorean and sum/double-angle identities.
- Verify identities with clear algebra steps.
- Choose rewrites that help solve equations.
- Note domain restrictions when needed.
On the AP Exam
- MCQ: pick equivalent form, spot identity error, simplify.
- FRQ: verify identity or solve after rewrite (skills 1.A, 1.B, 3.B).
Tactics
1. Scan for Pythagorean substitution opportunities. 2. For angle sums, match sin vs cos sign pattern. 3. For verify items, work one side to the other systematically. 4. Before solving, rewrite to factorable linear sin/cos form if possible. 5. Substitute a test angle to catch sign errors.
Common Traps
- Wrong cos sum sign.
- tan^2 + 1 vs 1 + tan^2 confusion (both sec^2).
- Dividing by cos without cos != 0 note.
- Stopping at equivalent form without finishing solve when asked.
