Family Overview
In Plain Language
Topic 3.12 is about equivalent trig forms—rewriting expressions with identities to simplify, verify, or solve.
- Pythagorean: sin^2 + cos^2 = 1 and forms like tan^2 + 1 = sec^2 (3.12.A).
- Sum/difference/double-angle: sin(A+B), cos(A+B), and derived identities (3.12.B).
- Solving: choose a rewrite that makes the equation accessible (3.12.C).
Why It Matters
Identities are the algebra engine for trig: they turn hard expressions into solvable ones (links to 3.10).
How Families Can Help
- Ask: "Which identity makes the next step easier?"
- Have them write the Pythagorean identity from memory.
- Check one identity numerically at a simple angle.
What Not to Do
- Do not distribute trig over angles incorrectly.
- Do not divide by sin/cos without noting zeros.
- Do not skip domain restrictions on equivalent forms.
