Exam Strategy
Readiness Check
You are ready when you can:
- Graph basic r = f(theta) on a stated interval.
- Explain theta input and r output roles.
- Restrict domain to show a desired portion.
- Read r from a polar graph at a given angle.
On the AP Exam
- MCQ: identify graph type, read r, domain restriction effects.
- FRQ: construct/describe polar graphs (skills 2.B, 3.A).
Tactics
1. Make a short (theta, r) table first. 2. Mark theta interval endpoints before sketching. 3. For circles: recognize r = a, r = a cos theta, r = a sin theta. 4. Label at least one angle and radius on FRQ sketches. 5. Check a point with x = r cos theta, y = r sin theta when unsure.
Common Traps
- Plotting against x instead of theta conceptually.
- Showing full curve when problem restricts theta.
- Misreading negative r direction.
- Verbal description that ignores distance-from-origin language.
Quick Checklist
