Exam Strategy
Readiness Check
You are ready when you can:
- State domain/range for arcsin, arccos, arctan.
- Explain why trig functions need restricted domains to invert.
- Evaluate and interpret inverse values at special inputs.
- Sketch/read inverse graphs and connect to forward trig.
On the AP Exam
- MCQ: domain/range, correct inverse choice, composition traps.
- FRQ: construct/represent inverses with justification (skills 1.C, 2.B).
Tactics
1. Check domain first for arcsin/arccos inputs. 2. Match range when simplifying arcsin(sin x) or arccos(cos x). 3. Label inverse graphs with domain on x-axis and range on y-axis. 4. Forward-check: sin(arcsin x) = x on [-1, 1]. 5. Use unit-circle specials before reaching for a calculator.
Common Traps
- arcsin or arccos with |x| > 1.
- arccos answer outside [0, pi].
- Confusing sin^-1 x with (sin x)^-1.
- Wrong inverse for a given ratio in a triangle.
Quick Checklist
- [ ] Correct inverse selected
- [ ] Domain verified
- [ ] Range branch stated
- [ ] Restriction reason clear
