In Plain Language

Topic 4.1 introduces parametric functions: both x and y depend on a parameter t.

  • Form: x = x(t), y = y(t), or f(t) = (x(t), y(t)) (4.1.A.2).
  • Table: evaluate x and y at several t-values (4.1.A.3).
  • Graph: plot (x, y) and connect in increasing t order (4.1.A.4).
  • Domain: restricted t often marks start/end of the curve (4.1.A.5).

Course scope only (Unit 4 additional topic; not on the AP Exam).

Why It Matters

Parametric form describes paths over time and prepares for motion, vectors, and later Unit 4 topics.

How Families Can Help

  • Ask: "What is t here? What are x and y at t = 2?"
  • Build a small table together before graphing.
  • Trace the curve in time order with a finger.

What Not to Do

  • Do not plot t on the x-axis unless the question asks for a t-graph.
  • Do not connect points in random order.
  • Do not ignore the stated t-domain.
