Exam Strategy
Readiness Check
You are ready when you can:
- Describe I and multiply a matrix by I.
- Compute det(A) for 2x2 A.
- Decide if A^-1 exists.
- Find and verify a 2x2 inverse.
- Interpret |det| as area when appropriate (3.B).
Course vs AP Exam
Course scope only (Unit 4 additional topic; not on the AP Exam). These skills still matter for Unit 4 coursework and readiness for 4.12-4.14.
Tactics (course assessments)
1. Compute det(A) first. 2. If det=0, state no inverse and explain (parallel vectors if applicable). 3. If det!=0, find A^-1 (formula or technology). 4. Verify AA^-1=I using multiplication from 4.10. 5. For area, use |det(A)| with vector columns/rows (4.11.B.2).
Common Traps
- Sign error in ad-bc.
- Attempting inverse when det=0.
- Skipping verification multiply.
- Using det without absolute value for area.
Quick Checklist
