Family Overview
In Plain Language
Topic 4.11 covers inverses and determinants of 2x2 matrices.
- Identity: I has 1s on the main diagonal and 0s elsewhere (4.11.A.1).
- Identity property: AI = IA = A for square A (4.11.A.2).
- Inverse: when it exists, AA^-1 = I (4.11.A.3); 2x2 inverses can be found with or without technology (4.11.A.4).
- Determinant: for A=[[a,b],[c,d]], det(A)=ad-bc (4.11.B.1).
- Geometry: |det(A)| is parallelogram area from column/row vectors; det=0 means parallel (4.11.B.2).
- Invertibility: A^-1 exists iff det(A)!=0 (4.11.B.3).
Course scope only (Unit 4 additional topic; not on the AP Exam).
Why It Matters
Determinants and inverses prepare for linear transformations (4.12) and matrix models (4.14).
How Families Can Help
- Compute det(A) before attempting an inverse.
- Verify AA^-1=I after finding A^-1.
- Connect |det| to area when vectors are given.
What Not to Do
- Do not invert when det(A)=0.
- Do not use ad+bc instead of ad-bc.
- Do not skip checking the product AA^-1.
