Topic 4.2 uses parametric functions to describe where a particle is in the plane over time.

  • Position: f(t) = (x(t), y(t)) gives coordinates at time t (4.2.A.1).
  • Horizontal extremes: farthest left/right from max/min of x(t) (4.2.A.2).
  • Vertical extremes: highest/lowest from max/min of y(t) (4.2.A.2).
  • Intercepts: zeros of x(t) are y-intercepts; zeros of y(t) are x-intercepts (4.2.A.3).

Course scope only (Unit 4 additional topic; not on the AP Exam).

Why It Matters

Position features help describe motion paths before studying direction and rates in 4.3.

How Families Can Help

  • Ask: "Where is the particle at t = 2?"
  • Track leftmost/rightmost from x(t) values.
  • Connect axis crossings to solving x(t)=0 or y(t)=0.

What Not to Do

  • Do not confuse path direction (4.3) with position-only features here.
  • Do not assume extrema occur at the same t for x and y.
  • Do not ignore the stated t-domain when finding intercepts.
